January 23rd, 2007: For the February 2007 issue of Creative Review, which goes on sale on Friday January 26th, world famous advertising agency Mother has become the magazine's first-ever guest editor.

Creative Review (CR) and Mother have collaborated on a unique issue of the magazine that examines the ethical dilemmas faced by everyone working in advertising and graphic design today.

Contributors that Mother has lined up include:

  • Photographer Alison Jackson, who imagines a pitch meeting between ad mogul Trevor Beattie and North Korean dictator Kim Jong-Il
  • Philosopher AC Grayling on the ethics of advertising and design
  • Peter Saville, who has designed a special sticker free with each copy
  • And God, or at least his representatives on Earth, as we reveal the Vatican's Ten Commandments of Advertising.

Each issue comes packaged in a brown paper envelope, together with two free A1 posters and the Peter Saville sticker.

The issue's theme of selling out was inspired by the fact that Mother has paid for the privilege of being guest editor. The issues that this arrangement raises - that of creative individuals being paid to put their creativity to the service of commercial interests - informed the content of the magazine.

Jess MacDermot, Publisher of Creative Review says, "This is the first time we have opened up the magazine to an outside creative influence and we are delighted with the results. We are expecting a dramatic take-up in copy sales of an issue which both in its design and in its editorial content will challenge and interest anyone working within commercial creativity today. CR has become known over the last 26 years as a magazine that is as creative as its readers. Arguably, one of the most creative of its readers is Mother. The coming together of the two brands has therefore been a perfect match."

CR editor, Patrick Burgoyne says, "Mother recently marked its tenth birthday and notched up a decade of iconoclasm. So we wondered what they might do if given a magazine to work on - this magazine. The content was arrived at after a series of meetings between ourselves and Mother and was developed collaboratively, with Creative Review retaining final editorial control. Why did we take their money? Because it allows us to spend on this issue alone more than we would normally spend in an entire year on editorial contributions. It allows us to print extra editorial pages. It allows us to produce the posters, stickers and inserts that come with this issue. In short, Mother's money, as well as their ideas, has made this a very special issue of the magazine. You may say that we have sold our soul, but I hope that you will also say that you love it."
